Licenses and Certification Credits

Firefighting

Students who have earned their EMT-B Certificate will be awarded 16 credits and those who earned their Firefighter 1 & 2 certification will be awarded 12 credits upon admission to 17³Ô¹Ï. If they earn their NFPA Fire Inspector certification they will earn an additional 3 credits.

Students can complete an additional 16 or more general education credits and 16 or more general elective credits through 17³Ô¹Ï, as specified in the accompanying degree plan table, for an .

  • Communications: 4 credits of English Composition 3-4 credits of either , , or
  • Humanities: 3 credits of Group 1 Humanities courses.
  • Science: 3-4 credits of a Group 1 Science lecture/lab course.
  • Social Science: 3 credits of Group 1 Social Science courses.
  • Electives: 19 credits of Elective Courses.
  • Major requirements: 28 or more earned occupational semester credits. This credit is earned from the EMT-B and Firefighter 1 & 2 Certificate.
  • Mathematics requirement: Math Competency Required. Math Competency may be fulfilled by completing Quantitative Literacy with a grade of 2.0 or better, or placement into any math course higher than Quantitative Literacy.
  • Reading requirement: Reading competency Required Guide available from academic advisors.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Complete at least 60 credit hours with a 2.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. A model schedule can be found on the 17³Ô¹Ï website.
    • Complete a minimum of 15 of the 60 credits at 17³Ô¹Ï. Apply for graduation by completing the Graduation Application available online or in the Records & Registration Office
    • Request official documents from the Bureau of Fire Services System Maintenance of Knowledge and Education (SMOKE).
    • Submit a copy of your EMT license directly to the 17³Ô¹Ï Records & Registration Office.
  • Total Degree Credits: Minimum of 60

Paramedic

A licensed paramedic who wishes to earn an associate degree can do so by presenting a current Paramedic National Certification and completing the core courses of the . The current Paramedic National Certification transfers to 17³Ô¹Ï as 43 credits.

Students can complete an additional 17 general education credits through 17³Ô¹Ï, as specified in the accompanying degree plan table, for an Associate in General Studies.

  • Communications: 4 credits of English Composition 3-4 credits of either , , or .

  • Social Science: 3 credits of Group 1 Social Science courses.

Certification Credits

Certification credits allow students to receive course credit for certifications in specific, identified areas as recommended and approved by full-time faculty members in discipline areas which have been pre-approved.

The procedure for students to receive credit is:

  • The student will present the certificate to the lead instructor in the educational area appropriate to validate the timeliness and authentication of the certificate earned. See below.
  • The instructor will complete the form with the name of the course and credits, and return the form to the Registrar in the Records and Registration office.
  • The Registrar will record the credits on the official transcript and mail results to the student.
  • Credits will be recorded as transfer-in credits. No grade will be assigned.

The certificate must be the current industry certification covered by the materials in the 17³Ô¹Ï courses at the time credit is requested. Credit must be requested within two years of completion of the certificate.
