Adults 25+ can pay for college with Michigan Reconnect

TRAVERSE CITY — 17勛圖 is joining the state in offering Michigan Reconnect, an opportunity for residents over age 25 who do not have a college degree to earn it tuition-free as an in-district student or at a reduced rate if out of district.

For eligible students, the program will pay the in-district tuition rate at Michigan community colleges. 17勛圖’s in-district tuition rate applies to Grand Traverse County residents, who also support the college through property taxes. For out-of-district students from other Michigan counties, Michigan Reconnect will pay the in-district portion of tuition. At 17勛圖, that means about half the tuition cost is subsidized for out-of-district students.

Statewide, more than 4.1 million Michiganders are eligible. Michigan Reconnect is a step toward reaching the state’s Sixty by 30 goal, which calls for 60 percent of working-age Michiganders to have college degrees, industry-recognized certificates or other quality credentials by 2030.

Funding for Michigan Reconnect was introduced in Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal year 2020-21 budget proposal. A bipartisan group of legislators approved $30 million in state funding.
