We will not only ensure that you have a smooth transition but will make sure that you have the necessary support and resources to accomplish your educational goals. For admission to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, you must apply to the Maritime Academy, not 17勛圖 — contact the Great Lakes Maritime Academy Admissions Office for more information.

Admissions Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • United States citizen
  • Prior or pending misdemeanors, felonies or legal expungements must be adjudicated by the Maritime Admissions Office.
  • United States Coast Guard physical standards and all requirements for licensing as a United States Merchant Marine Officer, as established by federal law
  • Academic placement may be accomplished through ACT/SAT test scores (must be less than 5 years old), transferrable college credit or AP scores or placement testing.

Please note these are the minimal score sets required to be considered for admission into the Academy. Acceptance is competitive.

A completed Application includes:

  1. Official high school transcripts (or GED)
  2. Transcripts from all colleges attended (if any). We highly recommend sending your military transcripts, but they are not required.
  3. Two letters of recommendation with contact information
  4. Undeleted DD-214, Armed Services Discharge Report. .
  5. A campus visit is required, but may be completed after an admission decision is received. Schedule your campus visit.

Request Transcripts

While serving, you may have taken military and job-specific courses that are worth college credit. Request your transcripts be sent to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.

  • Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Navy: Active Duty, Reserve or Veterans, request transcripts through the site

Important Dates

  • Maritime classes for incoming first-year cadets begin Fall semester only.
  • The Academy admits approximately 60 cadets each year
  • Early completion of application materials is advised. Application and deadline dates are found on our application page.
  • Even if using the GI Bill®, we encourage veterans to submit their FAFSA. The should be completed as soon as possible using school code 002302 and are available Oct 1 of the year prior to start of classes.
  • In Michigan, the FAFSA should be submitted by March 1 of the year classes start to be eligible for maximum aid.
