Transfer Students - High School Graduate or GED
You have earned college credits or an Associate Degree, but not a Bachelor's Degree (after high school graduation)
Admission Requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have earned a high school diploma or GED
- Applicants must be a United States citizen
- Applicants will be prompted to submit additional documentation if they have prior or pending misdemeanors, felonies or legal expungements. Backgrounds must be adjudicated by the Maritime Admissions Office.
- Applicants must meet the physical standards and all requirements set by the United States Coast Guard for licensing as a United States Merchant Marine Officer, as established by federal law. This is not an active duty military physical.
- To be considered, applicants must meet placement standards for their program. Placement in math and English (this can be accomplished by any or a combination of the following):
- Math Placement: Transferable college credits, Advanced Placement test scores, ACT/SAT that are less than 5 years old (below) or placement testing.
- English Placement: Transferable college credits, Advanced Placement test scores, ACT/SAT scores (below), High School GPA or GED scores. In some cases a writing sample may be required.

A completed application includes*:
- Official high school transcripts or GED.
- College transcripts from ALL schools attended and AP scores if applicable.
- Two letters of recommendation with contact information.
- If a Veteran, an undeleted DD214, Armed Services Discharge Report is required (copy).
- A campus visit is required of admitted students. An applicant may register for a visit once their application is complete, either prior to or after receiving an admissions decision.
*Additional supplemental items may be required by the Admissions Office on an individual basis

Important dates
- Maritime classes begin annually each Fall.
- The Academy admits approximately 60 cadets each year
- Early submission and completion of an application is advised. Admission/decision dates can be found here.
- The should be completed as soon as possible and are available Oct 1 of the year prior to classes starting. Use school code 002302 on your FAFSA form.
- In the state of Michigan, FAFSA must be submitted by March 1 of the year classes begin to be eligible for maximum aid.
